George W. Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended a private high school in Massachusetts and Yale University. After graduating in 1968, Bush moved to Texas, where his father, George Bush, was in the oil business. Bush joined the Texas Air National Guard but never served in Vietnam. Bush received an M.B.A. from Harvard in 1975 and started his own oil company in Texas. In 1978 he lost a race for the U.S. Congress. When the oil market declined, Bush sold his business and went to work for his father’s 1988 presidential campaign. After the election, Bush returned to Texas and organized a group to purchase the Texas Rangers baseball team. In 1993 Bush defeated Ann Richards for governor of Texas. As governor, he worked to increase state money for schools and welfare reform. Bush was reelected in 1998. He also ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000.
